چکیده

This study explores approaches for wind erosion risk assessment utilising available time-series Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and climate products. We present a simple index and a ruleset based approach to identify wind erosion risk areas across Australian using time-series of ground cover, soil moisture and wind speed. These approaches and data sets were implemented in a geographic information system to produce wind erosion risk maps for Australia at 500 m resolution on a monthly basis for the recent eleven year period (2000-2010). These maps were compared with dust modelling (CEMSYS) and measurements from DustWatch network. Results demonstrate that time series of ground cover, soil moisture and wind speed can be jointly used to identify landscape erodibility and to map seasonal changes across Australia. The wind erosion risk maps can be used to assist in better targeting areas for investments and continuous monitoring, evaluation and reporting that will lead to reduced wind erosion and improved soil condition.

Mapping wind erosion hazard in Australia using MODIS-derived ground cover, soil moisture and climate data

This paper describes spatial modeling methods to identify wind erosion hazard (WEH) areas across Australia using the recently available time-series products of satellitederived ground cover, soil moisture and wind speed. We implemented the approach and data sets in a geographic information system to produce WEH maps for Australia at 500 m ground resolution on a monthly basis for the recent thir...

Modeling Past Episodes of Erosion in the Lake Orūmiye (Urmia) Basin: Analogues for Future Landscape Dynamics

During the Holocene Lake Orūmiye has been subjected to significant changes in climate. These have impacted the surround vegetation and runoff, and erosion rates of the surrounding basin. Shifts in seasonal rainfall from winter to summer dominated patterns have resulted in dramatic changes in the Orūmiye Basin’s vegetation cover from grass to shrub dominated communities. The degree of ground sur...

The Role of Local Settlements in Combating Desertification of Isfahan's Desert Rangelands

Undoubtedly, land degradation linked to desertification causes a decrease in qualitative and quantitative features of natural resources. This research aimed to assess land desertification by local residents and their role in controlling desertification in Isfahan province, Iran in 2016. The criteria were soil climate, vegetation, erosion, and demography. The indicators of soil texture, stone fr...

Advanced machine learning methods for wind erosion monitoring in southern Iran

Extended abstract Introduction Wind erosion is one the most important factors of land degradation in the arid and semi-arid areas and it is one the most serious environmental problems in the world. In Fars province, 17 cities are prone to wind erosion and are considered as critical zones of wind erosion. One of the most important factors in soil wind erosion is land use/cover change. T...

Dust is one of the common processes of arid and semiarid regions that its occurrence frequencies has increased in recent years in Iran. The proper identification of sand and dust storms (SDS) is particular importance due to its impact on the environment and human health. So far, several methods for identifying these sources have been proposed such as methods based on field studies and geomorpho...
